This is a special year for the quantum community 𝗕𝗨𝗧 we need to tread with caution to navigate hype. It’s not surprising that quantum technology has become a “trend” in 2025 social media and the field is being misunderstood and misinterpreted.
This yet again points to the increasing need for education in quantum technologies. Education is the key to the Quantum Future. While it’s exciting to mark the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics, we must keep our expectations in check. While it brings attention to the significant milestones, the reality we are not yet close to a breakthrough that decides the “success” of quantum computing. But again, what do we even mean by “close” is a question of scrutiny as well. Rather than getting caught up in overblown promises or waiting for a single, game-changing event, let’s embrace gaining deeper understanding of quantum systems to ensure we are ready for the opportunities ahead.
🔍 The recent work of Microsoft was a phenomenal piece of research, yet the hype and marketing on social media made it seem otherwise- and that’s the problem with hype. In this special year, let’s focus on learning the fundamentals from scratch if we’re beginners in the field or otherwise!
While I don’t consider myself an expert, I still do want to bring this to the attention of the quantum community that we must exercise scrutiny on what social media talks about quantum computing and rather focus on upskilling ourselves. Upskilling and education are what will drive measurable impact today and tomorrow.
