Dr John is a Principal Engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is currently focused on creating high-performance cloud-computing solutions in both reaction to and anticipation of customer needs.
For approximately nineteen years, before joining AWS in June 2020, John was a Distinguished Research Staff Member, Program Director, and Manger at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, joining IBM after he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. At IBM he worked on a variety of projects and areas, including the design of libraries for quantum computing applications, high-performance classical simulation of quantum computing operations, natural language processing, distributed reasoning systems, massive scale analytics, computing at the edge, and high-performance scientific computing.
Dr. Gunnels’ research interests include quantum computing, data analytics, parallel algorithms and programming, code verification, high performance library specification and development, large scale scientific computing, and the effective use of hardware accelerators. He has published several papers, received numerous awards, and been granted patents in these, and several other, research domains.
